Breaking Glass was produced in 1979, and while the economic depression it depicts has adopted a depressing familiarity, in many other respects it is an intriguing representation of a lost era.

It is arguably the most conventional film to depict punk and new wave, yet fiercely champions the anarchic, anti-authoritarian ethic that prevailed in the musical underground at the time. And it launched one of the early 1980s’ brightest musical stars.

Starring Phil Daniels who also appeared in Scum and Quadrophenia and Hazel O’Connor in her screen debut.  Hazel also composed the film score, which included the hits "Eighth Day" and "Will You".

The new restoration DVD release of Breaking Glass have inevitably prompted a re-appraisal of this idiosyncratic rock musical. More than three decades on from its original release aspects of its narrative seem uncomfortably naïve, but the film also boasts some fine music, confident direction and affecting performances.

Just as importantly, Breaking Glass stands as a valuable document of tribal divisions and corporate machinations in a music scene that has now largely disappeared.

First time on DVD the original 100 minute film comes with the following extras:

Hazel O'Connor Remembers (37 mins)
Original cinema trailer
28 page booklet by film historian Marcus Hearn
20 page reproduction of original 1980 press pack
4 postcards of original film posters

Also available: Breaking Glass Barefoot - Hazel O'Connor's first, full autobiography.
